Best Places to Watch the Sunrise and Sunset in Charleston

Charleston might be known for its history, but if you ask me, the sunrises and sunsets here are nothing short of magical. My favorite sunset is the one that sets over Bohicket Creek in the winter. I see it from my parents’ front porch.
I have no idea why the sunsets are more dramatic in winter. Maybe a scientist has the reason? Drop me a comment if you know!
As for sunrises, the ones I see from my backyard on Johns Island, coming up over the Stono River, take my breath away. And if I happen to be on the Stono Bridge when the sun’s just come up, the glory of that vista—the marsh and river below, the distant treeline, and dawn sky—is beyond compare.
Whether you’re an early bird or more of a sunset chaser, we’ve got splenty of spots in the Lowcountry that’ll make your heart skip a beat. Check out the following list:
Sunrise
- Folly Beach: If you’re the type who’s willing to roll out of bed early (trust me, it’s worth it), head over to Folly Beach for a sunrise you’ll remember. With the ocean in front of you and not a building in sight, it’s the perfect peaceful start to your day. The sky lights up with pinks and oranges—total magic!
- Kiawah Island: Want a little more solitude? Kiawah’s beaches are your spot. It’s a bit quieter here, so you’ll feel like you’ve got the whole beach to yourself as the sun peeks over the water. Bring a blanket, some coffee, and enjoy the view.
- Waterfront Park: Now, if you’re downtown, Waterfront Park is the place to be for a sunrise. You’ll catch the sun rising over the Cooper River with the fountains and palm trees all around you. Talk about a picture-perfect morning!
Sunset
- The Battery & White Point Garden: When it comes to sunset, I’m a little partial to The Battery. It’s got history, charm, and one of the best views in town. Watch the sun set behind the harbor while the old mansions glow golden in the fading light. You can almost hear the whispers of Charleston’s past.
- Sullivan’s Island: If you’re looking for a relaxed, laid-back sunset, head over to Sullivan’s Island. You can walk along the beach and watch the sun dip behind the horizon, all while the sounds of the ocean and seagulls fill the air. It’s the kind of spot that makes you want to sit and stay a while.
- Charleston Harbor: If you really want to go all-in, take a sunset cruise around the harbor. You’ll see the city, the water, and the sky all come together in a beautiful burst of color. It’s the perfect way to end your day in Charleston.
